On January 15, 2026, the Massenhoven-Van Eyck high-voltage upgrade project was officially inaugurated by Belgian grid operator Elia. Lamifil is proud to have been part of the significant reinforcement of the Belgian high-voltage grid, delivering 600 kilometres of high-performance ACCC® Arlington overhead conductors. These advanced conductors double the 380kV line’s electricity transmission capacity between the substations of Massenhoven (Antwerp) and Van Eyck (Limburg), making optimal use of the existing corridor.

Strengthening Belgium’s grid backbone

The Massenhoven-Van Eyck project involves the comprehensive reinforcement of the 380kV high-voltage connection spanning approximately 92 kilometres across the provinces of Antwerp and Limburg. This upgrade is crucial for optimizing internal electricity flows resulting from increased renewable energy integration. Additionally, it facilitates smoother cross-border exchange with the Netherlands, enhancing Belgium’s security of supply and supporting the broader European energy grid.

Innovative high-performance HTLS conductors

Image 2 To meet the demands of this critical infrastructure, Elia required High Temperature Low Sag (HTLS) overhead conductors, capable of carrying significantly more current than previous generations without increasing conductor sag or requiring major structural modifications.

Lamifil responded to this need by manufacturing and supplying 600 kilometres of ACCC® Arlington conductors, manufactured at its plant in Hemiksem, Belgium. This high-performance overhead conductor features a composite core and Z-shaped wires in the outer layer. The latter offers superior aerodynamic properties and allows for the use of slimmer towers, optimizing the physical footprint of the grid infrastructure. These advanced conductors effectively double transmission capacity compared to older conductors.

As a dedicated partner, Lamifil provided comprehensive additional services to ensure the project’s success, including specialized training for installation teams focused on ACCC® technology and on-site assistance during the installation process.

A continued long-term partnership

Massenhoven-Van Eyck is one of many projects that are being completed to strengthen the Belgian grid. Lamifil has been a partner supplying thousands of kilometres of efficient and high-capacity conductors for nearly all these projects. Lamifil’s partnership with Elia underscores a shared commitment to a robust, future-proof energy network that balances technological innovation with environmental responsibility.
