Supporting Spain’s Navarre region in reaching its renewable energy goals

Naturgy Energy Group S.A. (formerly Gas Natural Fenosa), one of Spain’s largest distribution system operators, has completed yet another step in its plans to increase renewable energy generation in the region of Navarre in the northern part of Spain. To accommodate the anticipated >122 MW output of two new windfarms, the company recently finished the upgrade of the 66kV San Esteban to Muruarte de Reta line with new ACCC® Conductor provided by Lamifil.

Supported by engineering company Grup Soler and contractor Eiffage Energia, Naturgy Energy Group S.A. started the installation on May 1 and completed it on June 6. The line, which included highway, railway and plantation crossings over hilly terrain, was re-energized on June 14, 2019. Meeting all requirements within a sustainable solution, Lamifil supplied over 18 km of ACCC Brussels conductor to replace the existing ACSR Gull (LA 380) conductor on this line.

The two new wind farm projects of Tirapu and Barásoain will be located in the vicinity of the existing San Esteban I (30.42MW)

and II (42.05 MW) wind farms. The energy evacuation of these two new parks is planned through the upgraded San Esteban to Muruarte de Reta line which can now handle the anticipated >122 MW of generation capacity. The new wind turbines included in the Barásoain and Tirapu wind farm projects are estimated to generate the necessary electricity for some 62,000 homes each year, equivalent to the annual consumption by half the population of the Navarre region capital of Pamplona. At the same time, they can reduce environmentally harmful emissions and greenhouse effect emissions by 122,000 tonnes/year.
